Castle Brewery - Newark
Client: Cunningham Lindsey
Senior Surveyor: Peter Whitehouse
Project Duration: 8 weeks
Value: £158,000
Contracts Manager: Paul Staines
The project was carried out at James Hole and Company Castle Brewery, Newark. The building was designed by William Bradford and built in 1890 - the brewery ceased trading in 1986 and was empty for over 10 years before sensitive conservation work was carried out to provide high quality apartments.
The contract which was delivered on time by The Gelder Group was to completely re-roof 3 areas due to tile and nail deterioration allowing water ingress.
The tile selected had to be approved by Newark and Nottinghamshire Conservation Surveyor to ensure compatibility. The project incorporated new lead work, cast iron guttering and re-pointing to three elevations.
The methodology for completion of the restoration works had to comply with the heritage techniques and craftsmanship.
Scaffolding proved to be very challenging due to the configuration of the roofs, the building generally and the fact that we were working between the main access route into Newark from the A1 and the River Trent to the North.
