Work Completed on Owl Tower

The latest addition to the Group’s 13 acre Environmental Project has recently been completed. Built by two of our apprentices from materials reclaimed from our recycling centre (Greentech Management Services) this three metre tall structure will hopefully make an excellent home for barn owls and other birds of prey.

The project began when the Environmental Project was highly commended at the 2009 Lincolnshire Environmental Awards. Our Environmental Officer, James Hill, contacted the overall winners of the Award, ‘Operation Barn Owl,’ which, in little over 20 years, has increased the number of breeding pairs of barn owls from 200 to more than 900. Colin Shawyer of the Wildlife Conversation Partnership and Operation Barn Owl visited the project to determine if it was suitable for a pole mounted nest box. He concluded that the site was, in fact, perfect for a more permanent structure and gave us his colleague’s designs for the owl tower.

The tower contains 3 individual nest boxes. The largest is suitable for barn owls and the two subsidiary boxes will hopefully prove attractive to other birds of prey, such as kestrels. Look out for an update when we attract our first breeding pair!
