James Hill engages delegates with ethical building speech at British Research Establishment, Watford
Gelder Group Environmental Officer, James Hill, gave an outstanding speech from stage at the British Research Establishment, Watford, after being requested to speak at a National Subsidence Forum event on the merits of sustainable construction.
Gelder Group are members of the National Subsidence Forum, a group made up mainly of insurers and companies specialising in subsidence related property repairs, which meets regularly to discuss and standardise repair methods throughout the industry. The forum is generally regarded as being the authoritative voice from within the industry.
The Forum puts on an annual training day open to all which is attended by professionals from within the industry and many insurers so James cleverly linked his speech back to ethical investors and the effect these can have on a companies share price. This clearly hit home with some insurers and has led to a string of meetings since the October 13th Speech. James comments “I think some insurers were a little shocked when I explained that construction work generated by the insurance industry sends in around 3.5million tonnes of waste to landfill annually attracting a staggering cost of £268.5 million. This combined with the fact that every landfilled tonne will soon cost over £100 and landfill capacity will run out in eight years time certainly raised a few eyebrows and engaged delegates in heavy discussions afterwards”
James adds “On average 30% of all construction waste is sent to landfill but with the Gelder Groups investment in its waste management arm, Greentech, we have reduced our average to less than 6%. This has been recognised with a string of awards, most notable of which was our commendation at the National Recycling Awards held at London’s Park Lane Hilton Hotel”.
