Gelder Group Environmental Project welcomes new Visitors
We checked the Gelder Group Owl Tower nest boxes recently and are pleased to report we do indeed have some ''fluffy'' residents on site!
A Barn Owl flew out of the box, only a few meters away from us, which was a great sight. We then proceeded to check the other two nest boxes and found 4 baby Kestrel chicks of about 12 days old.
These were ringed on the spot by licensed ringer Steve Wain.
Our Barn Owls haven’t yet laid, however we’re hoping they may do so any day - it's obviously a great sign the Owls are actually in the nest box for a third season. Steve Wain plans to return to site in 4 weeks to check how our Owls are doing and also check the progress of the baby Kestrels. National statistics suggest Kestrel number have dropped radically in recent years making our GG Nest site a valuable asset to the British Countryside. The third and main chamber of the Owl Tower is currently vacant however it has recently been inhabited by Owls due to the freshness of the pellets found.
