Squelch and Burn Make Lincolnshire Business Awards Finals

A Gelder Group social project to educate youths that have fallen out of mainstream education has made it to the finals of the Lincolnshire Business Awards.

Gelder Group is a previous 3 time winner at the Lincolnshire Business Awards but has never before been nominated for the “Supporting the Community Award”.  The winners will be announced on the 10th February 2011.  Commenting on the nomination Group MD Steve Gelder says “these kids have been amazing; people doubted our ability to engage them but we have and they should feel very proud of their achievement”.

The Squelch and Burn team manufacture briquettes from old newspapers for burning on open fires.  They have set up a production line that delivers 120 brickets a day, built a website, opened a bank account and have sold many brickets.

Commenting on the scheme one student said “thank you, since I have been part of the project I have grown up and for the first time in my life I have been encouraged and praised for the work I do”.

Gelder Group Training Manager, Mike Johnson, said of the above “it is humbling to get comments such as that” adding “we are all very proud of these kids, all of which had fallen, for various reasons, out of mainstream education.  It makes you realise just how important it is for companies such as the Gelder Group to be involved in the local community, it really does matter”.
