Construction Company gets involved in the Curriculum
The UK’s first Construction Careers College in Gainsborough has now enrolled over 20 students onto the course and has many local construction organisations involved in the curriculum and developing the format for the course as well as providing staff to undertake workshops with the students. The Gelder Group Design Department recently undertook a workshop with the students who are aged between 16 -18 about a career in Design, with a hope of inspiring them to pursue careers in construction too.
The Gelder Group staff set up a short design and master planning project for the class, enabling them to work in groups; this involved reading architectural drawings and presenting their design ideas together in front of their peers. On the event Tori Norval, Apprentice Design Assistant commented “Everyone did fantastically and we were impressed at the student’s efforts. If we got the opportunity to do it again then we’d be happy to put ourselves forward”.
This new college represents a unique opportunity for young people to secure a lucrative and rewarding career and for the region to plug its skills gap.
